Forge your path, and push forward through a world of magic and dreams.
WATER DRAGON FEST
The portside Town of Elmina is holding their annual Water Dragon Festival in honor of the Water Dragon Waka. Water Dragon Waka is a known foodie, so there will be a cooking competition held by the city lord as well as a variety of street vendors set up to celebrate the festivities. Additionally, the royal family of Valeria will be holding a hunt in the nearby Pouring Rainforest in honor of this event. This forest is controlled terrain so they will be releasing captive beasts into it. Choose. Do you want to help or hinder with these activities? The choices are yours.

he waited by the border under the shade of a shack meant to be used by travelers and the like. sitting by a bench, his eyes would rest at the open field opposite the desert as he waited for another person who took the same job as him.
eyes would widen as he finally found a person that seemingly fits the description of who he should be waiting for. the twiddling of thumbs would eventually stop, and a smile would form on his expression as his eyes met theirs.
"oh, uh, hello!"
the job entailed an investigation of the desert, something that uther was highly prepared for. a bag of supplies laid on his feet, most of them to aid him for emergencies.
he hoped he needed them, however, since that meant a real adventure.
"we should probably go soon," he'd mention casually.
they were late on schedule as it is, though uther simply does not want to say it out loud. they wouldn't want to be out under the desert sun without protection, after all.
Her hair extended above her like parasol, shielding her from the morning light. Clutching her linen dress, she nervously gnawed at her lips until her ivory skin turned deep pink. Her eyes were swimming, wrung with distraught, as she tiptoed her way towards a bench. Carefully repeating words to herself, she looked like an anxious mess.
[break][break]
“Hi my name is Ishtar; I’ll be your partner for this request. Hi my name is Ishtar; I’ll be your partner for this request. Hi my name is--”
[break][break]
Murmuring the introduction to herself like a chant, she hardly noticed the man smiling at herself. She bit her tongue, and blood spurted out her mouth. She started up at him with a blank expression.
[break][break]
“Hi my Ishtar name is partner for this request.” The words left her in a high pitched whistle. A tumbleweed blew by. “Yeah. Okay. We go now.”
not being in a guild meant that the people he'd be with during missions wouldn't always be people he knows. more than that, there was always a risk of being paired up with a questionable individual. he wouldn't say that ishtar was one of them however.
he understood what she said despite the obvious blunders. still, he wonders if there was anything wrong with her. perhaps in the head? uther wouldn't mention that though, as he has enough tact to keep some of his thoughts to himself.
"are... are you okay?"
uther would approach her halfway, before deciding against it. she seemed alright for the most part. he places a hand on the back of his neck before cracking a smile and turning to their route. "alright," he'd say in a more comforting tone.
"i'm cain by the way," he'd introduce as he walked. "nice to meet you, ishtar."
She was almost sure that she was going to die of embarrassment. Almost but not quite. Following behind her mission partner, she twiddled her thumbs nervously as they advanced into the dessert. The sun, hot and flaming, sat high above them, beating down mercilessly on her pale white face. Adjusting the angle of her hair-isole, she attempted to shade the other mage some too.
[break][break]
“S=sorry! I thought it might be hot! Because it’s noon! N-noon is hot!” she chirped incessantly. Hazarding her magic, a little bit further, her hair also served as a barrier for the moderate wind. Scratching her cheek, she quietly panicked under her breath. Hopefully he didn’t think her using her magic like this was too weird.
[break][break]
Pushing forward, she swallowed. “S-so. Which way do you think we should go?” Pointing around the randomly, her fingers stopped in every direction.
maybe he should have learned a more versatile magic than what he was currently using. better yet, maybe he should have brought something to help him brave the hazards of the deserts. thanking her was the best thing he could do at that moment.
her question got him thinking as well. he takes out a nicely folded piece of paper that entailed the mission description and unfolded it. there was nothing specific in the paper that could help them however.
"we're going straight," he announces in a cheerful note as he returns the quest notice back on his pocket. "we'll just keep going until we find something interesting, i suppose."
he continues walking, though his pace is controlled so that he remains under the shade provided by ishtar.
Ahhhh, the Red Desert. A ridiculously large expanse of sand, with hidden treasures and locations scattered all throughout. If only the Kingdom had more knowledge about it, though that is why they are sending you two little Mages on this expedition. [break][break] You have been very fortunate to have continued to walk without running into any trouble. The Red Desert is notorious for its sandstorms and vicious wind that halt even the most experienced explorers. However, your journey has been quiet, and quite easy thus far. [break][break] After a few miles of walking in this heat, you stumble upon a silhouette of a small abandoned camp. You are still a good deal away and the naked eye can easily spot that it had been ravaged by a terrible sandstorm not too long ago. Whether it is completely abandoned or not is the question, however. [break][break] Will you go and investigate your first sight of something tangible within the desert? Who knows what these scattered tents contain. I'd be careful if I were you.
She nodded her head profusely, so quickly it seemed as if it were going to roll right off her neck. “Straight. Okay. Straight!” she repeated, taking shy glances towards the dark-haired man. She wasn’t sure if she was supposed to agree or disagree when he was asking for her opinion. It had been so long since someone asked for that, so she hardly knew how to answer. Did she even have any opinions? Any good ideas? The noisy thoughts rattled through her head. Shaking her head ever so slightly, her fingers crossed into a tangled mess and her eyes drifted away from her partner.
[break][break]
“H-huh? What’s that in the distance?” She murmured and squinted as she pointed towards some crude structures far ahead. It seemed like straight wasn’t a half bad decision. Pale grey tents contrasted against the sunny sky, some loosely buried beneath the sand. There was the whistle of the wind, but her ears caught not a single sound thereafter. Moving a little faster, she advanced towards the scattered wreckage. Though these scenes weren’t uncommon, it was still worth to give a chance.
ishtar points him to the direction of a camp site. eyes immediately widened at the discovery. it meant that they probably made progress, and progress was good.
"ooh! looks like we're into something!"
he gets excited, clasping his hands and rubbing his palms against each other in anticipation. he hopes to gain anything relevant within the abandoned settlement, no matter how small they are.
not unlike his companion, he moves in a faster pace towards their current target. he would have probably considered running too, had the desert not been a pain enough. the desert heat did its job of getting them more fatigued after all.
excited after a long time of travelling in the desert and not seeing anything of importance, he hastily goes for the tent. his hands went into a finger gun pose, ready to call for his pistols at a moment's notice.
You may have been curious enough to start looking, but will you be keen enough to find what it is the people before you were searching for? [break][break] As Uther took the initiative to look inside the tent, something else began to stir around Ishtar. Uther entered the tent. It was completely flipped upside down, and what was once the tent of this groups main researcher, was now a destroyed mess with papers all over the floor as well as destroyed objects. In the corner of the tent was the person whom this space belonged to. He was dead. If investigated, the marks on his body would reveal he was obviously murdered. [break][break] With Uther inside the tent, Ishtar was left alone by her lonesome. Whatever was stalking her made its move. It attempted to grab her wrist from behind. What she would discover when turning around to face the creature was that it was a skeleton made out of sand. What she didn't know, however, was that this was the remnants of someone else's magic. This discovery was beginning to turn into something they didn't expect. If you two could survive, and uncover some of the clues hidden around this forsaken camp, who knows what you might figure out. [break][break] PM spade for any questions. ENJOY.
”Hya!” she whipped around, her hair flying like whips and daggers. Grabbed suddenly from behind, Ishtar’s instinctive reaction was to strike first and ask questions later. Eyes blinking wide open, she grabbed the hand clasping her wrist and screamed, “I’m sorry!” Two magical tendrils shot in front of her violent, striking against her attacker and turning him back into dust.
[break][break]
Clutching her wrist, she started the breath heavy. “W-what was that...?” she murmured. Falling to the ground, she inspected the ground in front of her. It was... just sand? The golden grains slipped through her fingers and were blown away like the other remains of the desert.
[break][break]
Realization dawned on her slowly as she sat up right. “I should tell the other mage!” Scrambling towards the tents, she whipped the doors wide open. “I-I found something outside...! It was... it wasn’t h-human!”
the corpse was the first thing that attracted his attention.
it takes uther a moment to collect his thoughts and force himself to move after he sees it. only then did he realize the wreckage within the tent. various objects were strewn all over the floor. another glance at the body, along with the status of the tent, suggested that it was murder.
he starts to collect the papers on the ground to get a clue of what was going on. compiling them in a nice bundle, he starts to read its contents when ishtar barged in inside. uther momentarily stops what he was doing upon hearing her statement.
"is it something helpful?" he asks in the most hopeful manner.
his head motions to the body, trying to shift ishtar's attention to it. "i found a human though. he seems like an important person for our mission, i think."
he starts to shift the papers on his hand, giving ishtar parts of the papers he had already skimmed over. "i'm thinking that maybe there's something relevant in all these. what do you think?"
You disposed of the skeleton created out of sand in one swift movement. I bet he didn't expect your instincts to be so aggressive. [break][break] The human that you found was one of many that were slaughtered here in this very camp. Luckily for you, whatever did it did not stay long after it finished the job. The papers held in your hand were journal entries written by the dead man. [break][break]
"The desert-folk that we tailed back to their place of living yesterday have found us. My comrades are being killed as I write this. They're not far from here, they have a who—"
[break][break] It was safe to assume that the man was killed before he could finish writing. The paper had dried blood on it even if you still weren't sure. You hold the information that somewhere nearby lived a group of desert-folk. You weren't sure how far, nor in what direction, but that this camp served as a good position to continue the investigation. Do you report back to the Kingdom, or do you take the risk and go searching for yourselves? There was a strong possibility that unless marked otherwise, this location would disappear with the sand in a matter of weeks leaving you two back at square one.
She fiddles her finger and plays with her thumbs—not exactly sure what ‘something helpful’ entails. It really wasn’t much, and there certainly wasn’t any proof of it now, but it was magic, and magic was something to be investigated. “W-well... I’m not sure b-but—” her words were cut off by her partner gesturing towards a dead body.
[break][break]
Hesitantly, ishtar steps forward and begins inspecting the body. It looked like he was murdered, and judging by the smell it’s been quite some time since then. “How horrible...” her face twisted into a frown as she began flipping through papers. A large wax stamp identified him as a soldier from the kingdom.
[break][break]
“W-we should head back.“ she murmured. She had heard that the relationship between Valeria and the Red Desert was bad, but she hadn’t known that it had been to this extent. They needed to quickly report this soldier’s passing and collect their reward. “He’s been dead for so long. We should go back and pray for his passing. If we go any further, who knows what’ll happen to us.”
he honestly wanted to continue further. they already made progress and finding the same exact place in the middle of the desert wouldn't be easy. they'll basically forfeit their progress just so they can bring the information back to their client.
...but if she wants to go back, who was he to stop her from doing so.
"well, if you think it'll be better that way..."
maybe he should have thought about his safety once in a while. having lived under immense protection, he rarely gets to reap the consequences of his actions. maybe she was right. returning was the best course of action right now.
"let's just collect everything that looks useful," he says as he starts bundling the papers scattered around. eyes would scan for relevant objects that may tie in to what was clued in within the text, before sighing and simply taking everything.
many of them would go to the space where he stores his weapons with his requip magic. the more important ones, such as the documents, get to go on a bag that he carries around.
